Cast your vote for the Greatest Moments in Sports History – Sports Illustrated
The moments that make sports great are the ones that take your breath away. You remember these moments not only because of the magic you saw unfold on the field or the court or the ice, but because you remember where you were as you watched. You remember who you were with and how you felt. These are the moments that transcend statistics and final box scores, that shaped sports history and our connection to each other.
In launching Sports Illustrated’s 100 Greatest Moments in Sports History, we are recognizing the most pivotal, influential and memorable of all time. This franchise highlights cultural events like Jackie Robinson’s MLB debut and Billie Jean King’s “Battle of the Sexes” victory over Bobby Riggs. It remembers the fabulous finishes from Christian Laettner’s buzzer-beater against Kentucky to walk-off World Series home runs by Bill Mazeroski and Joe Carter. Picking the moments was challenge enough, but we also chose to rank them.
A team of SI editors and writers spent months, compiling, analyzing, discussing—and, yes, arguing about—these moments. We recognize that the final list has a largely American viewpoint, and that it covers more from the 60 years that SI has been in print than it does from the centuries that preceded them. We also excluded the infamous events that are remembered for the wrong reasons. We’re sure you won’t agree with this entire list from top to bottom, so we included an interactive ranker tool below. We love the community sports create, and the conversation these games sparks. So share with us your favorite moments in sports history.
