If only the Detroit Lions didn’t drag everything down with that black trim.

ESPN’s “Uni Watch” ranked the best-dressed sports cities this week – the 20 cities with at least three major pro sports teams – and placed Detroit at No. 8, just behind Toronto and the New York Metropolitan Area.

And that ranking, based on cumulative scores of each of the team’s uniforms, could’ve been higher had the Lions’ uniform drawn a better score than a 3 out of 10.

“The Motor City may have its problems, but sports aesthetics isn’t one of them (well, except for the Lions, who really need to ditch all the black trim, go back to a conventional number font and get rid of Ford Field’s roof),” wrote Paul Lukas. “If a crazy quilt of rotating designs is your thing, then Motown isn’t the place for you — the Tigers, Lions and Red Wings currently have zero alternate uniforms among them. But it will do you just fine if you’re in the market for a solid-looking sports town.”

The Tigers’ and Red Wings’ uniforms scored a 9 out of 10 each, while the Pistons’ unis drew a 6.5. Then Lukas gave two intangible scores: -2 for the Ford Field dome, and +1 for the fist of Joe Louis in downtown (“arguably the world’s coolest sports sculpture”).

The top five: Boston, Pittsburgh, Chicago, Philadelphia and the San Francisco Bay Area.

The worst-dressed sports city of the 20? Atlanta, with the Falcons and Hawks earning really bad scores.
