Facebook’s Sports Stadium Is Having a Rough Super Bowl – Adweek

So far users are giving Facebook’s Sports Stadium a thumbs down Facebook

The Carolina Panthers are down 13-7 at halftime of Super Bowl 50, but Facebook might have had a worse first half.

The social giant launched Sports Stadium a couple weeks ago in an attempt to grab some of the social conversation that goes on around live sports, which has been mostly dominated by Twitter and its Moments feature.

And the Super Bowl was to be its big coming out party, putting Facebook on the map as a major destination during games. But so far, Facebook’s nascent platform has had a few hiccups, most notably the fact that it’s having trouble keeping up with the game.

And Facebook’s loss was Twitter’s gain: Many users who sampled Sports Stadium ended up turning to Twitter to air their frustrations. Aside from having trouble staying with the action, it appears some users have been underwhelmed with the amount of actual conversation around the game. Much of the problem during the first half was due to high traffic volume, which could have been expected since this is Facebook’s first time trying to grab real-time traffic in an event of this magnitude.

“Due to overwhelming traffic and activity, people visiting Facebook Sports Stadium during the Super Bowl may have experienced a delay with the scores and play-by-play information available in the Matchup and Stats tabs, or a problem with posting in the Friends tab,” said a Facebook spokesperson in an email to Adweek. “Content in the Experts tab was unaffected. We are actively working to correct the issue.” Sports Stadium has been a bit better in the second half but is still operating with a lag.
