COLLEGES:
Men’s basketball:
In dire need of immediate size, William and Mary’s basketball program announced the addition of Cole Harrison, a 6-foot-11 graduate transfer from Dartmouth.
Harrison played in 51 games with the Ivy League team but missed the past season with an injury. For his career, he averaged 1.4 points and 1.4 rebounds a game.
Harrison played his high school ball at Montrose Christian (Md.) for Coach Stu Vetter.
Harrison will enroll in the Master’s of Business Administration program and join the Tribe for its trip to Jamaica from Aug. 5-11.
“Cole immediately gives us an experienced player to strengthen our front line,” Tribe coach Tony Shaver said. “He is a skilled big man with good size who helped Dartmouth to the postseason for the first time in over 50 years during his career.”
Harrison will help fill the void left by 6-9 center Jack Whitman, who transferred to Kansas but announced last week that he will not play for the Jayhawks.
Football:
Hampton’s game at Norfolk State at 2 p.m. Oct. 14 will be televised on ESPNU as well as online on ESPN3.
Baseball:
Former Norfolk State left hander Devin Hemmerich was voted as the Virginia Sports Information Directors University Division State Pitcher of the Year, and Old Dominion’s Chris Finwood was named the Coach of the Year.
Hemmerich, now in the Los Angeles Dodgers’ minor-league system, became NSU’s first-ever VaSID Pitcher of the Year. He was joined on the all-state first team by fellow 2017 major-league draftee Alex Mauricio (utility) and rising senior Justin Burrell (third base), a Woodside High graduate.
Old Dominion’s Jared Young and Evan Rutherford made the first team, as did William and Mary’s Ryder Miconi. George Mason’s Trevor Kelly, a York High graduate, was among the second-team picks.
Promotion:
Sundays are now “Dog Days” at all home matches this year for Old Dominion men’s and women’s soccer and field hockey. Fans can bring their dogs, on a leash, to any of the 10 Sunday games in those sports. There is no charge for bringing a dog.
BASEBALL:
International League:
Norfolk overcame Columbus 8-5 at Harbor Park in a game that was halted and eventually stopped for good in the seventh inning because of rain.
The Tides (47-59) overcame deficits of 2-0 and 3-2. Logan Schafer belted a solo home run to tie the score at 3 in the fifth, and Norfolk took control with a five-run sixth that began when there were two out and no runners on base.
Luis Sardinas’ RBI single prompted the Clippers (55-50) to bring in reliever Kyle Crockett from Poquoson. Schafer bunted for a single, Chris Dickerson was hit by a pitch, and Chris Johnson hit a two-run single. Drew Dosch and Pedro Alvarez followed with RBI singles.
Eastern League:
Richmond overcame a six-run deficit to overcome Erie 9-7 before 4,015 at The Diamond. Myles Schroder was 3 for 5 with three runs and Hunter Cole batted 3 for 3 with two RBI for the Flying Squirrels (43-60).
Grayson Greiner’s grand slam in the fifth inning put the SeaWolves (54-49) up 7-1, but the Flying Squirrels climbed back. A five-run sixth tied the score at 7, and Richmond went ahead to stay in the seventh when Schroder scored on Cole’s sacrifice fly.
Coastal Plain League:
The last-place Wilson Tobs scored three runs apiece in the third and fifth innings and beat the Peninsula Pilots 6-2 in a rain-shortened game at War Memorial Stadium. It was stopped in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Mercyhurst’s Drew DelSignore slugged his team-high 13th home run, a shot to left field, to pull the Pilots within 3-2 in the fourth. But in the fifth, Wilson (15-32, 6-13 in the season’s second half) pulled away after two Peninsula errors and a two-run triple by UC Santa Clara’s Andre Nnebe.
James Madison left-hander Colt Harlow took the loss for the Pilots (27-20, 11-8).
BASKETBALL:
Hampton Roads Academy’s Quadir Pettaway scored 16 points to help the Boo Williams Summer League’s 16-and-under Elite Youth Basketball League team, “Chiz,” earn a 56-52 victory over New Jersey’s Sports U/Team Izod in the AAU Super Showcase at Boo Williams Sportsplex.
Lafayette High’s Marcus Banks added 11 points for Chiz, which overcame a six-point deficit in the final three minutes.
Chiz was to take on the Michigan Warriors at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in the next round of the 10th-grade Division 1 Gold Bracket.
