KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Game 1 of the World Series was delayed for more than five minutes after Fox Sports’ telecasts of the game was bumped off the air.

The outage occurred at 9:19 ET, shortly after Kansas City Royals designated hitter Kendrys Morales struck out looking against New York Mets starter Matt Harvey.

After TV transmission was lost, Major League Baseball Chief Baseball Officer Joe Torre consulted with the umpiring crew and the game was halted.

It resumed at 9:26 ET after the Fox telecast came back on.

Fox explained the outage, which occurred in the bottom of the fourth inning, by saying its broadcast truck in Kansas City lost power. During the delay, Fox switched to the MLB Network feed with Matt Vasgersian taking over for Joe Buck as play-by-play announcer. Buck and the Fox broadcast returned in the bottom of the fifth inning, but not before a second brief outage.

Both managers — Mets’ Terry Collins and Royals’ Ned Yost — agreed to continue the game without instant replay.

Google Fiber apologizes for Kansas City outage

Fox apologized for both outages and released a statement:

“Before the start of the bottom of the fourth inning of tonight’s World Series Game 1, a rare electronics failure caused both the primary and backup generators inside the FOX Sports production compound to lose power. The issue was immediately addressed, although it resulted in the audience missing one at-bat during the time needed to switch to carriage of Major League Baseball’s international feed, powered by a different generator on site. The on-field delay was due to replay capability being lost in both team’s clubhouses. We apologize for the interruption in tonight’s coverage and are working to ensure that the remainder of the World Series is broadcast without incident.”

The national broadcast was not the only issue. Locally in the Kansas City area, customers of Goggle Fiber had problems seeing the game. Google released this statement:

“Tonight, some Google Fiber customers in Kansas City experienced a service outage. We’re working hard to make sure our customers can enjoy the rest of the World Series, and we’ll provide more details as soon as we can. We apologize for this interruption on an important night.”

Google Fiber is ultra-fast Internet service, which offers speeds of one gigabit per second, about 100 times as fast as the average broadband connection in the USA. It’s only available in select cities. Google Fiber is now run under the umbrella of Google parent company Alphabet.
