HBO ‘Real Sports’ climbs inside Joe Maddon’s mind — and his RV – Chicago Tribune
Some of the Cubs‘ most impressive stats belong to “Cousin Eddie.”
That would be the name of Joe Maddon‘s RV, which he drives from his home in Florida to spring training every year.
This year, broadcaster Bryant Gumbel of HBO’s “Real Sports” series joined the Cubs manager for part of the trip, giving fans a glimpse of how Maddon lives when he’s on the road. The episode first aired Tuesday.
“It’s like an oasis,” said Maddon, who sleeps in the vehicle while at spring training in Mesa, Ariz.
Some of the more impressive numbers related to the RV:
- 45 feet long
- 4 televisions
- 1 1/2 bathrooms
- 1 fireplace
Maddon’s mammoth ride also features a king-size bed, heated floors and a washer and dryer.
Gumbel was taken aback by the number of TVs on board.
“Why do you need four televisions?” he asked.
“You don’t, you don’t — you need three,” Maddon replied, adding that the one hanging above the front seats is unnecessary.
The interview also touches on baseball including what went on in the Cubs clubhouse during the rain delay in Game 7 of the World Series in Cleveland.
“I walk up the steps to the manager’s office and (the players are) all peeling off to the right into the little weight room down there,” Maddon said. “They said, ‘(Jason) Heyward’s having a meeting.’ I said, ‘Good.'”
He also elaborated on the sayings and references to mentors on his lineup cards, including “DNBAFF.”
“Do not be a (bleeping) fan,” Maddon explained. “Don’t spectate, don’t watch the game; you cannot take one pitch off.”
