Marc Anthony is expanding the field of action of his Magnus Media, the entertainment company he launched earlier this year, with the launch of Magnus Sports, a fully integrated division dedicated to representing major athletes.
First client is four-time Major League pitcher Aroldis Chapman, who plays for the Cincinnati Reds.
Chapman’s signing is part of a joint venture deal with baseball agency Praver Shapiro Sports Management, which represents several Latin players.
The launch of Magnus Sports is designed to fill a void, said Marc Anthony in a statement released today.
“Baseball, like music, is an ingrained cultural passion for many Latinos throughout the world, and there’s no shortage of amazing stars of Hispanic origin. Despite that, until now there hasn’t been an enterprise specifically designed to meet their needs. With Magnus Sports, we are changing the existing dynamics and building a new kind of Management Company that understands the culture and knows how to build big media brands.”
Marc Anthony launched Magnus Media earlier this year, with Michel Vega, a former agent at WME, as its CEO. Its roster currently includes Venezuelan duo Chino y Nacho and Cuban duo Gente de Zona, which Marc Anthony has been working closely with and with whom he’s released two singles, including chart-topper “La Gozadera.”
Based in Miami, Magnus includes management, film, TV and digital content, a record label and a marketing division.
The new Magnus Sports division will be jointly overseen by Vega and Praver Shapiro’s Barry Praver and Scott Shapiro.
