NBA, Wake Forest star Chris Paul partners with D1 Sports on Winston-Salem … – Triad Business Journal
Chris Paul, a former standout player at Wake Forest University who now plays in the NBA, has partnered with D1 Sports Training & Therapy on the company’s new Winston-Salem location.
Scheduled to open in June, D1 Winston-Salem will become the Nashville, Tenn.-based firm’s 29th location and offer a range of sports training and physical therapy and rehabilitation.
As the Triad Business Journal reported in February, D1 Winston-Salem will be housed in the 43,000-square-foot former home of floral products wholesaler Raper’s at 1901 Mooney St. near Hanes Mall. Building permits indicate that the facility was undergoing a $1.1 million makeover.
D1 has partnered with Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center on the facility, with the medical center providing on-site orthopedic and sports medicine care as well as physical therapy and rehabilitation services.
D1’s model is to partner with big-name sports stars, including Peyton Manning, Tim Tebow, Chipper Jones and Philip Rivers. D1 Matthews opened in the Charlotte suburb in January 2014 with Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Steve Smith (formerly with the Charlotte Panthers) as its sports partner.
“We are providing greater access and convenience to our existing patients and delivering premium sports medicine and rehabilitation services to them at this top-notch training facility,” said Dr. John McConnell, CEO of Wake Forest Baptist.
D1 says it focuses on replicating top college and pro training environments, with an emphasis on athletes between ages 7 and 22. The Winston-Salem location will include state-of-the-art exercise equipment, a full-sized weight room, an indoor turf field measuring 85 yards by 35 yards and two basketball courts.
Chris Paul, a point guard now with the Los Angeles Clippers, played two years at Wake Forest during which he helped lead the team to its first No. 1 ranking. A native of Winston-Salem and graduate of West Forsyth High School in Clemmons, he was selected fourth in the 2005 NBA draft and traded to the Clippers in 2011.
