Phoenix among most affordable cities for sports fans – azcentral.com
It takes a commitment to be a serious sports fan, and I’m not just talking about the time we spend watching the games.
Sports fandom is expensive, and some cities are friendlier than others on a sports fan’s wallet.
According to The Home Story’s Adam Korengold, the Phoenix market is among the nation’s most affordable cities for sports fans.
Korengold ranked Phoenix at No. 6 in his rankings. Philadelphia took the top spot.
The site arrived at the list by analyzing HSH.com’s most affordable cities rankings and eliminating any city with a highest minimum required salary over $60,000 (New York, San Francisco, Boston, Los Angeles and D.C.).

The site also analyzed Bleacher Report’s “25 Best Cities to be a Sports Fan” list. Unlike the Bleacher Report lists of old, this one seemed to have actual data and a point system involved, which took into account the quality of local stadiums, teams, stars, fan involvement and history.
So, after all that, Korengold settled on a top 10.
This is what he had to say about Phoenix:
6. Phoenix: Median household income of $51,291 is a healthy $10,561 greater than required salary ($40,730). Phoenicians can pick from the football Cardinals as well as the baseball Diamondbacks and basketball Suns, as well as the hockey Coyotes.
The list only factored in professional teams, so Arizona State’s presence in this sports market was overlooked. With that in mind, Phoenix may be underrated on the list.
