Police respond to incident at US security agency in Maryland: reports – Reuters

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Police have responded to an incident at the National Security Agency at Fort Meade in Maryland, around 20 miles from Washington, local media reported on Monday.

Authorities said the driver of a vehicle tried to ram the entrance gate at the Fort Meade U.S. Army base, the FOX News affiliate in Washington said, adding that the incident led to shots being fired.

The local NBC News affiliate reported that two damaged vehicles were seen outside the installation’s gate and that emergency workers were seen attending to an injured man who was put in an ambulance. MSNBC said two people were injured.

Representatives for Fort Meade and the U.S. Army could not be immediately reached to confirm the reports.

NBC television footage showed a large police presence outside the installation, and at least one damaged vehicle.

The Washington Post said police at Fort Meade confirmed the incident happened on the NSA side of the installation but gave no other details.

Fort Meade, a U.S. Army base in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, lies northeast of the nation’s capital.

In a post on Twitter, the county’s police department referred questions to the NSA and Fort Meade, adding that it was “not involved at this point.”
