The newest addition to Hillsboro Village’s restaurant scene features roll-up garage doors, more than 50 draft and bottle beers and 35 television screens.

Double Dogs, a casual bar and restaurant chain based in Bowling Green, Ky., is set to open to the Monday at the corner of 21st and Acklen avenues on the ground-floor of H.G. Hill’s new Hill Center Acklen development.

The restaurant has been training staff and hosting “friends and family” nights this week to prepare for the official opening.

Double Dogs is one of six tenants opening on the ground-floor of Hill Center Acklen. Other tenants are: The Pilates Garage, Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams, Revelator Coffee Co., Native + Nomad boutique and Uncle Classic Barbershop. The project also includes 42 apartments, along with a 118-space parking garage.

The roughly 5,000-square-foot Double Dogs features roll-up garage doors, an outdoor patio with a fireplace, a two-sided bar that allows customers to sit inside or outside and 35 television screens with sound boxes available for individual tables.

Dan Davis, president of Rafferty’s restaurant, opened Double Dogs in Bowling Green in 2008. There is also a location in Knoxville. The restaurant is inspired after Davis’ love of dogs.

“I tell people that after 30 years of eating hamburgers and drinking beer, we wanted to do our own place,” Davis said.

He described the restaurant as family friendly, adding that it’s not just for watching sports.

“We dog themed it. We didn’t want a sports bar with a bunch of neon and sports memorabilia everywhere; we wanted to make it family friendly,” Davis said.

The Double Dogs menu features hot dogs, salads, burgers, sandwiches, pizzas, wings and more. Specific items include: spicy buffalo chicken tender salad; Greek salad; chicken pot pie; barbecue bacon cheeseburger; BLT; chicken club sandwich; and pesto veggie pizza. Davis said the price point is about $10 per customer.

The beer menu has 18 draft beers, including local options from Jackalope, Blackstone and Yazoo. Double Dogs offers a “beer of the week” special, where a select 22-ounce craft beer and domestic beer are priced at $2.95 all week.

“We focus on trying to definitely carry some of the beers brewed here locally in Nashville and you know, just trying to give the customer a good, wide variety of selection,” said Double Dogs general manager Chad Dennison.

Double Dogs also works with local animal rescue organizations. The restaurant is donating its proceeds from its practice week to the Nashville Humane Association, and it plans to donate 10 percent of its sales on Wednesday to Snooty Giggles Dog Rescue.

Double Dogs’ opening brings more change to Hillsboro Village, which has some experienced retail and restaurant turnover in recent months. Village Brewhouse & Marketplace opened recently in the former Boscos space, Nashville restaurant group Fresh Hospitality has an agreement to purchase the former Sunset Grill building with plans to open three concepts, and Aladdin’s Hookah Lounge & Bar is preparing to open in the former Boca Loca Cantina space. Meanwhile, the Hill Center Acklen development is nearing completion.

John Morrison, area vice president for Double Dogs, said they don’t view the neighboring Sam’s Sports Grill or Village Brewhouse as competition, adding that there is plenty of business to go around.

“We’re all in this together. We’re all rooting for each other,” Morrison said.

Double Dogs hours are: 11 a.m. to midnight Sunday through Wednesday, and 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday. The hours may be adjusted based on customer demand.
