Sources: Spurs assistant meets about Grizzlies opening – Yahoo Sports

San Antonio Spurs assistant coach James Borrego met with Memphis Grizzlies officials on Sunday to discuss the franchise’s head-coaching job, league sources told The Vertical.

Memphis officials have discussed the job with several candidates, including former Pacers coach Frank Vogel, and are working through an initial round of meetings, league sources said.

Borrego is one of several assistant coaches under consideration, including Charlotte’s Patrick Ewing, Miami’s David Fizdale, Portland’s Nate Tibbetts and San Antonio’s Ettore Messina, sources said. The list could still expand.

Memphis fired Dave Joerger, who had wanted to pursue other jobs on the market, and he was hired as Sacramento’s head coach last week.

After two-plus seasons as the top assistant in Orlando – including 30 games as the interim head coach – Borrego returned to Gregg Popovich’s coaching staff in 2014, where he’s played a prominent role on the bench.

Borrego worked his way up from the video room in the Spurs’ organization to the coaching staff, and then joined New Orleans as an assistant coach in 2010. Jacque Vaughn hired Borrego as his top assistant with the Orlando Magic in 2012.

After Vaughn was fired midway through the 2014-15 season, Borrego earned praise for his decisiveness and purpose in his short window coaching the Magic. The Magic were 10-20 under Borrego.
