Froome on verge of winning Spanish Vuelta

Chris Froome is poised to break his streak of runner-up finishes at the Spanish Vuelta after the Tour de France champion maintained his overall lead on the final competitive stage of the grand tour on Saturday.

Froome increased his advantage over Vincenzo Nibali through the rainy 73-mile mountainous ride in Stage 20 from Corvera de Asturias to a grueling summit finish at the Alto de l’Angliru.

Under race tradition, the top riders do not challenge each other in the final stage.

Dominant at the Tour de France in recent years, Froome has finished as the Vuelta as runner-up on three occasions. He came in behind Juanjo Cobo in 2011, Alberto Contador in 2014, and Nairo Quintana last year.

MLS: Lee Nguyen scored in the 68th minute and the New England Revolution beat the Montreal Impact 1-0 at Foxborough, Massachusetts.

Nguyen took Teal Bunbury’s pass from about 30 yards out, slid past a pair of defenders and finished with a low hard shot for his ninth goal of the season.

The Revs (10-12-5) moved a point behind the Impact (10-11-6) and Atlanta United, who are tied for the sixth and final playoff spot in the East.

• Nemanja Nikolic tied it in the 66th minute and the Chicago Fire held on for a 1-1 draw with the New York Red Bulls in Bridgeview, Illinois.

Michael de Leeuw squared Johan Kappelhof’s deep ball with a flick pass across the top of the 6-yard box and Nikolic connected with a header down into the middle of the net for the Fire (13-9-6).

Bradley Wright-Phillips volleyed home Sacha Kljestan’s header pass in the eighth minute to open the scoring for the Red Bulls (12-10-5).

LPGA TOUR: Lexi Thompson pulled away from Lydia Ko to win the inaugural Indy Women in Tech Championship for her second victory of the year and ninth career title, in Indianapolis.

Tied with Ko entering the final round at Brickyard Crossing at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Thompson closed with a 4-under 68 for a four-stroke victory over Ko. Thompson finished at 19-under 197.

EUROPEAN TOUR: Scott Hend of Australia extended his lead to two strokes when play was suspended during the weather-affected third round of the European Masters in Crans-Montana, Switzerland.

Hend birdied the par-3 13th hole minutes before fading light forced the players off a second time. Earlier, fog shrouding the Swiss Alps course caused a two-hour, 24-minute stoppage.

The four leading players were due back on course at 8 a.m. Sunday to finish the third round.

The clubhouse leaders at 8 under were Marcus Fraser of Australia, Lucas Bjerregaard of Denmark and Dean Burmester of South Africa.

CHAMPIONS TOUR: Scott McCarron was in a familiar spot atop a PGA Tour Champions leaderboard in his first trip to Japan. California childhood rival Kevin Sutherland was close behind – again.

Coming off his third victory in the last six tournaments, the 52-year-old McCarron shot his second straight 6-under 66 at Narita Golf Club in Chiba, Japan, to take a one-stroke lead over Sutherland in the Japan Airlines Championship – the senior tour’s first event in Japan.

TRACK AND FIELD

100 METERS: Yoshihide Kiryu became the first Japanese sprinter to break 10 seconds, winning a 100-meter race in 9.98 seconds in Tokyo.
