Sea Dogs game suspended, will be completed Sunday

The first game of a scheduled doubleheader between the Portland Sea Dogs and the Binghamton Rumble Ponies was suspended because of rain Saturday in Binghamton, New York.

The scoreless game will resume in the fourth inning, beginning at 12:05 p.m. The teams will then play Sunday’s regularly scheduled game.

The second game of Saturday’s doubleheader was postponed until Friday, Aug. 25, and will be played in Portland as part of a doubleheader, beginning at 5 p.m.

EMPIRE LEAGUE: Eric Mozeika struck out seven and allowed just three hits to lead the Old Orchard Beach Surge (32-23) to an 11-1 win over the Sullivan Explorers (21-34), capping a doubleheader sweep at Loch Sheldrake, New York.

Edgar Lebron Jr. scored three runs for the Surge, and Kevin Phelps had three RBI.

In the first game, Old Orchard scored three runs in the third and three in the sixth on its way to a 6-3 victory.

Tony Bakeris had two hits, including an RBI single.

BASKETBALL

EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP: Greece’s basketball federation accused the Milwaukee Bucks and the NBA of hatching a plan to prevent Giannis Antetokounmpo from playing in the event.

About an hour after Antetokounmpo posted on Facebook and Instagram that he was unavailable because of a knee injury, the federation attacked the Bucks and the NBA in a statement, describing an “organized and well-staged plan” to keep Antetokounmpo from playing in the Eurobasket at the end of the month.

BUNDESLIGA: Borussia Dortmund showed signs it can thrive without suspended forward Ousmane Dembele by opening its campaign with a 3-0 rout at Wolfsburg.

United States teenager Christian Pulisic scored one goal and set up another.

Dembele remains suspended after missing training camp when Barcelona made a bid for the player.

PREMIER LEAGUE: Riyad Mahrez showed potential suitors what they could be getting by setting up both goals in Leicester City’s 2-0 win over Brighton.

The Algeria winger put in a transfer request during the offseason, but Leicester has rejected three bids from Italian side Roma.

Elsewhere, Manchester United routed Swansea 4-0, and Liverpool squeezed past Crystal Palace 1-0.

TENNIS

WESTERN & SOUTHERN OPEN: Simona Halep moved within a victory of the No. 1 ranking.

The second-ranked Halep needed just 54 minutes to cruise past Sloane Stephens 6-2, 6-1 in the semifinals at Mason, Ohio, and can displace Karolina Pliskova as the top of the ranking with a win over Garbine Muguruza on Sunday.

Fourth-ranked Muguruza reached her first final in the event with a 6-3, 6-2 win over defending champion Pliskova.

The men’s final will feature two first-timers. Grigor Dimitrov outlasted John Isner 7-6 (4), 7-6 (10) in the first semifinal, and Nick Kyrgios beat David Ferrer 7-6 (3), 7-6 (4).

GYMNASTICS

SIMONE BILES: Olympic champion Simone Biles is back in the gym. Just don’t call it a comeback. At least, not yet.

Biles, who won four gold medals at the 2016 Games, says she is just testing the waters as she considers a return to competition. The 20-year-old has spent the year since Rio de Janeiro taking a break from the sport and says she is in no hurry to make a decision.
