The White House on Tuesday dropped its demands that a government funding measure include $5 billion for Trump’s proposed wall.
That retreat will allow Congress to reach a funding compromise and avoid a partial government shutdown later this week, experts say.
Senate Republicans and Democrats agreed on $1.6 billion for the border earlier this year, but it remains to see what amount is included in the final bill.
White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Tuesday that the administration is now exploring alternative funding “that we can couple with the money that would be given through congressional appropriations” that would help the president protect the southern border.
Trump has also said that Mexico would pay for the wall, as he promised on the campaign trail, through savings from a new trade deal.
