After Donald Trump revealed that his struggling Trump National Doral Miami resort in Florida may host the G7 summit next year, the hashtag #TrumpBedBugs began trending on Monday with thousands of Americans ridiculing the president over a bug infestation at the luxury resort in 2017.
Trump held a joint press conference with French President Emmanuel Macron at the end of the G7 summit in Biarritz on Monday where he confirmed for the first time that the Trump National Doral Miami resort has been floated to be the location for next year’s summit.
“Doral happens to be … only five minutes from the airport, the airport’s right next door,” the president told reporters. “And by the way, my people looked at 12 sites, all good, but some were two hours from the airport, some four hours.”
He added: “We have a series of magnificent buildings, we call them bungalows, they each hold from 50 to 70 rooms, they have magnificent views. And what we have also is Miami.”

Hours later, Twitter users began ridiculing the president’s remarks by resurfacing a 2017 article about the Trump National Doral resort settling a lawsuit over biting bed bugs, making the hashtag #TrumpBedBugs trend on Monday afternoon.
The report states that the resort reached a tentative settlement with a business traveler, Eric Linder, who sued after his face, back and arms were “devoured by voracious bed bugs at the revamped resort.” Linder filed the lawsuit in July 2016 after he spent a night at the location’s $300 per night Jack Nicklaus-themed villa.

“Well that explains why I saw this deal on Groupon with 48% off discount rate #TrumpBedBugs,” Twitter user @L3_LeAnn wrote, alongside a screenshot of the deal on Groupon.
“Disgusting but not unexpected from a Trump property. #TrumpBedBugs,” Twitter user @mariadw1 wrote, alongside a GIF of socialite Paris Hilton pulling an ugly face.
“He’s gross and apparently so are his ‘resorts’! #TrumpBedBugs,” Twitter user @pinkbungadoo wrote.
“Does European health care cover being bitten by #TrumpBedBugs?” Twitter user @FrankWi96130809 wrote.
“Someone had to do it #TrumpBedBugs,” Twitter user @LIslubee wrote, alongside edited image of a bed bug with Trump’s face superimposed on it.
“#TrumpBedBugs as a former Carmen San Diego style traveler, this was my biggest fear! I always checked the beds, headboards, lamps… and kept my suitcase in the washroom. Not surprised to find trump cutting corners like this,” Twitter user @AndreaGStylist wrote.
