The first weekend of October is shaping up to be the best weekend of the young college football season.

There are five games matching ranked opponents, starting with No. 7 Notre Dame visiting No. 11 Clemson. It’s the biggest test so far for the Irish and backup quarterback DeShone Kiser.

The other headiner is in Athens, where No. 6 Georgia hosts No. 13 Alabama. Already with one loss, the Crimson Tide likely are out of the College Football Playoff picture if they don’t win.

Elsewhere, No. 14 Oklahoma and No. 21 West Virginia meet in a critical early Big 12 showdown. In the SEC, No. 15 Texas A&M tries to stay unbeaten against No. 22 Mississippi State and No. 5 Mississippi visits No. 23 Florida.
