CLEVELAND, Ohio — The first major winter storm of the season is expected to arrive this weekend in Northeast Ohio, with forecasters predicting heavy snowfall and freezing temperatures in the region.
Cleveland has been largely spared from snow so far this season, but that’s expected to change on Saturday and Sunday. The National Weather Service has not yet provided estimated totals for the area, but the agency is predicting the snowfall could be accompanied by blustery winds.
Temperatures are also expected to be frigid. Saturday’s high is expected to be near 31 degrees, but the overnight low could drop to 17 degrees. Sunday is forecast to be even colder, with a high near 15 degrees.
Lingering snow showers will remain in the area through Monday morning.
The weekend storm will arrive on the heels of lighter snow forecast over the next three days. Snow showers could begin Tuesday night and continue into Wednesday morning, but less than a half-inch of accumulation is expected in Cleveland.
Akron is also expected to see less than a half-inch of snow on Tuesday and Wednesday.
A wintry mix could arrive in the area on Thursday, bringing less than one inch of snow to both Cleveland and Akron.
The storm comes a week after Winter Storm Gia brought heavy snow from the Rocky Mountains to the Mid-Atlantic region. The storm also impacted parts of Ohio, dropping nearly 9 inches of snow in Cincinnati, according to The Weather Channel.
Cleveland saw its first significant snowfall of the season last weekend. Cleveland Hopkins International Airport recorded 1.8 inches of snow on Saturday and Sunday, after recording just 2.8 inches of snow throughout all of last month.
