WRGB (CBS-6) announced this morning the creation of a half-hour weeknight live local sports program, which will air on sister station WCWN (CW-45) beginning Aug. 31.
“Upstate Sports Edge” will air Monday through Friday at 10:30 p.m. WRGB Assistant sports director Kelly O’Donnell will be the host. Sports director Doug Sherman will serve as c0-host while continuing his duties as the 6, 6:30 and 11 p.m. anchor of the WRGB weeknight sportscasts.
“My goal is to deliver a fresh new television show every night that is driven by local sports,” O’Donnell said in a statement released by the station. “We’re going to have fun, be informative, be different, and most of all, be very dedicated to sports that are happening here in the Capital Region.”
WRGB and WCWN general manager Vince Nelson said, “It’s not just about developing more sports content, it’s about creating a new brand of local television and Web coverage for our area’s high school and college athletes and teams.”
The launch is scheduled to coincide with the opening week of high school football season, which kicks off on Friday, Sept. 4.
The broadcast will showcase a variety of sports throughout the year, the station said, with a focus on local high school and college athletes and teams, and current sporting trends and topics from around the Capital Region.
“ ‘Upstate Sports Edge’ will deliver hyper-local scholastic and collegiate coverage that national sports cable networks simply can’t provide,” news director Steve Richards said in the station’s news release. “CBS-6 is investing in additional reporting and producing staff, and more high-definition video equipment, for the venture.
“ ‘Upstate Sports Edge’ goes beyond television, crossing over into Web coverage and into social media via
Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and others. We couldn’t be more pleased to serve our local community in this way.”
