Sunday, July 31, 2016

Since he coasted to the 100-meter finish line in world-record time at the Bird’s Nest eight years ago, Usain Bolt has been the smiling face of track and field. He has served as the anchorman of the Olympics — virtually the only reason any casual fan would pay attention to a sport that has orchestrated its own slow, sad, drug-infused downfall. His tender hamstring improving, Bolt will be back for…

Chinese Super League Football on Sky Sports: TV review – Telegraph.co.uk

Sunday, July 31, 2016

I’m not saying one is necessarily aquiver with excitement about watching Obafemi Martins play football but, footballers, like any supra-national amoral corporate entity, will go where the money is. There’s no reason to suppose that today’s quite good-ish Colombians might soon be, say, James Rodriguez, and then it’s a hop, skip and a lorry land of cash to yer Neymars.  And thirdly, the football is of a good standard, and…

US PGA Championship 2016: day four – live! – The Guardian

Sunday, July 31, 2016

Good morning America! An earlier Sunday start than expected, then, on account of all that rain, and the threat of lethal lightning, yesterday. We could have more of the same bad weather today, of course – there’s a fair chance the 98th PGA Championship will stretch into Monday, or even Tuesday – so nothing is set in stone. But for now, the plan is this: get the third round completed…

David Dahl makes baseball look easy, but his path to the majors was a hard road – The Denver Post

Sunday, July 31, 2016

NEW YORK — David Dahl is a graceful, fluid athlete who makes the difficult game of baseball look easy. But to simply label him “The Natural” is to gloss over the passion, drive and character it took for him to reach the majors at age 22. It bypasses the obstacles he has had to overcome to fulfill his dream. “I’ve been playing since as long as I can remember,” said…

Sport’s tarnished image creates a crisis of faith in our great love – The Guardian (blog)

Sunday, July 31, 2016

Walking through Stratford on a recent summer’s evening, I saw the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park full of young people. The sight of a well-maintained public space fulfilling its intended purpose gave me a warm glow: so many teenagers energising the place, a multi-ethnic advert for London’s Olympic legacy. Then I spotted the police horses and a small gang trying to force open the door to the café toilets, and realised…

NDSU Effectively Bans Media From Covering Bison Sports Unless They Paid For Rights – Deadspin

Sunday, July 31, 2016

North Dakota State is cutting off outlets from covering Bison athletics unless they’ve paid a media rights ransom, according to local Fargo newspaper The Forum. University administrators, apparently feeling they hadn’t yet gotten rich enough off unpaid student-athlete labor, are going so far as to ban blogging during games from non-partner media members. Also banned? Covering press conferences live, hosting any live programs from NDSU’s campus, or interviewing coaches. NDSU’s…
