Sports Authority Anticipates Buyer for ‘Major Portions’ of Stores – Wall Street Journal

Tuesday, May 03, 2016

No lead bidder has stepped forward to rescue Sports Authority from bankruptcy, but the distressed athletic-gear retailer expects “substantial parties” to make offers for all “or at least major portions” of its operations, company lawyer Robert Klyman told a judge Tuesday. “Contrary to rumors and certain press reports, the debtors are not liquidating today,” Mr. Klyman said at a hearing in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Wilmington,…

Sports Authority is still pursuing a “robust” sale process and is not fully liquidating just yet, attorneys for the sporting goods retailer told a federal bankruptcy judge on Tuesday. Several parties have expressed interest in all or most of the Englewood-based company’s assets, attorney Robert Klyman told Judge Mary Walrath at a hearing in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Wilmington, Del. “The liquidation word is not in our vocabulary,” Klyman…

Amazon didn’t get the NFL deal, but it’s getting more serious about sports – Re/code

Tuesday, May 03, 2016

Heads up, ESPN: Amazon wants to get into sports on the web. The giant retailer, which tried but failed to land a deal to stream live NFL games, wants to stream other sports via its growing web video operation. That’s why it has hired an executive to head up a new sports group: James DeLorenzo started working at the company as head of sports in March, per his LinkedIn bio….

Katie Nolan is challenging the way we think about women covering sports – The Guardian

Tuesday, May 03, 2016

Katie Nolan refuses to be a victim. All the TV host needs to do is scroll through her Twitter feed, read YouTube comments, or turn on some sports radio show to hear people say how annoying, slutty and talentless she is. Once, when she hosted her first radio show, a caller phoned the station, shouted “Fuck you, cunt!” live on air, and hung up. Nolan could be discouraged. Pissed off….

Column: NASCAR’s Talladega wreckfest comes at a price – USA TODAY

Tuesday, May 03, 2016

(Photo: The Associated Press) TALLADEGA, Ala. (AP) — Nobody needs to be reminded that racing is inherently dangerous. We all know drivers assume the risks. It’s understood that no one forces a driver to compete. That shoulder-shrug approach doesn’t make the scorecard from Sunday’s race at Talladega Superspeedway any easier to accept. The delicate line between sport and entertainment was dangerously straddled by 40 drivers roaring along in a pack…

After another crash-filled race, there’s no easy fix for NASCAR’s Talladega problem – Washington Post

Tuesday, May 03, 2016

(AP Photo/John Bazemore) NASCAR made its return to Talladega on Sunday, and to the surprise of exactly no one, there were big crashes. And bigger crashes. This is nothing new at Talladega, the treacherous 2.66-mile tri-oval at which speeds of 200-plus mph are attainable, or at least would be if NASCAR didn’t mandate the use of restrictor plates — which limit engine power by cutting down on air and fuel intake. And…

Dreams can come true: Leicester wins English soccer title – USA TODAY

Tuesday, May 03, 2016

(Photo: The Associated Press) LONDON (AP) — Leicester City players crowded around a television inside the house of teammate Jamie Vardy, locked arm in arm, watching the action 100 miles away. And when the final whistle blew at Stamford Bridge, they raised their arms in triumph. One of the greatest sporting achievements in English history was complete. In the second tier two years ago, in a relegation fight last season,…

Government hid fact it paid for 2012 Olympics film aimed at Muslims – The Guardian

Tuesday, May 03, 2016

A propaganda campaign run by the British government hid from the public its funding of a London Olympics documentary shown on 15 TV channels and watched by 30 million Muslims worldwide. Journalists who made the documentary also say they were not told about the government funding, a claim denied by officials. One journalist says his life could have been in danger because he was sent to work in two dangerous…

At the Galaxy’s school, soccer is hardly the only subject – Los Angeles Times

Tuesday, May 03, 2016

Midfielder Paolo Carrillo-Weisenburger played one game of school soccer, in the seventh grade, and finished with two goals and an assist. It was an experience, the 15-year-old remembers, that taught him two things: He was pretty good and interscholastic soccer wasn’t. “I knew that level of play wasn’t going to help me get better,” he said. “I wanted to put myself in a challenging environment.” The high school sophomore found…

Leicester City’s Premier League championship is one of the greatest sports stories of all time – SB Nation

Tuesday, May 03, 2016

Monday, Leicester City just clinched what might be the most improbable championship in sports history: We watch sports for improbable things, but things as unlikely as Leicester City’s win almost never happen. I’m not being hyperbolic. This is one of the most ridiculous things ever to happen in sports. Leicester City faced ridiculous odds Leicester City faced the longest odds ever to pay off at a…

Leicester’s Historic Victory Has Stunned World Soccer – TIME

Tuesday, May 03, 2016

If sport is a quest for the epic then this English premiership football season is one for the ages. Little Leicester City has spent most of its 132 years flitting between the top two tiers of English football. Their best-ever finish to a season came when they finished second in 1929. Last year only an end-of-season rally allowed them to avoid being relegated from England’s top flight yet again. And…
