Inside Baseball: Hot Stove’s mid-point winners and others; plus MLB notes – CBSSports.com
It’s somewhat dangerous to do a winner and losers column only halfway through the winter. After all, there around 100 free agents still unsigned, so by the time spring training starts exactly two months from now, this could all be reversed. Or at least wildly different. But here goes, with one minor adjustment, rather than “losers” we’ll have non-winners. That’s only fair as there’s still plenty of time to go….

A Castro offers hope for a U.S.-Cuba future in baseball – Chicago Tribune
As Tony Castro charismatically worked the crowd like a trained politician, wearing Under Armour sunglasses and a Nike T-shirt, he would have blended in any corporate-fueled baseball stadium in America. Except this was in Cuba, and some of the hands Castro shook were extended by men who defected from his country in the dead of night on a small boat: Jose Abreu and Yasiel Puig. So it was more than…

3 NASCAR storylines to watch this offseason – SB Nation
The surest sign there is very little “off” in NASCAR’s offseason came in the form of a Goodyear tire test Monday at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Staged as a way to determine various tire compounds to be utilized in 2016, the one-day session also allowed new driver-team combinations to begin the acclimation process. Among those taking part were championship runner-up Kevin Harvick, Brian Scott, making his debut with Richard Petty Motorsports,…
The Anatomy Of A Bogus Soccer Rumor, Starring Wayne Rooney – Deadspin
As any sports fan knows, rumors of trades, signings, suspensions, and lineup changes—almost always vaguely attributed to sources—dominate sports media reporting, and therefore our conversations about sports. (Perhaps the causal arrow points in the other direction?) But what the American sports fan may not know is that European soccer rumor reporting is orders of magnitude worse. It’s post-apocalyptic stuff, perpetrated by a bunch of Mad Max extras with credentials and…

Baseball finds an ally named Castro – STLtoday.com
MATANZAS, Cuba • During a visit by Major League Baseball to Cuba engineered for symbolism, it doesn’t get richer than Antonio “Tony” Castro, son of iconic president Fidel, taking a jersey and a cap from Cubans in the stands and carrying the items, personally, for an autograph from a player who defected a few years ago. In that moment Thursday at Estadio Victoria de Giron, Castro skirted around chairs, television…

For Brandon McIlwain, it’s football AND baseball … with the Gamecocks – The State
Quarterback Brandon McIlwain will sign with the Gamecocks and enroll in January, he announced Thursday. “I’ve decided to forgo the MLB draft and enroll early to play baseball and football at SC,” he tweeted. The decision means McIlwain, a two-sport star from Newtown, Pa., will skip his chance to be a part of June’s Major League Baseball draft. He has been committed to South Carolina since Dec. 31, 2014. McIlwain…
A Korean baseball analyst breaks down Hyun-soo Kim’s game – Baltimore Sun (blog)
I had a chance to talk with Korean media member Daniel Kim on Thursday about the Orioles two-year, $7 million agreement with Korean outfielder Hyun-soo Kim (no relation) pending physical. And I asked for a scouting report on the 27-year-old, left-handed hitting outfielder with the career .318 batting average in the Korea Baseball Organization. Daniel Kim, who is based in Seoul, is a TV baseball analyst for KBSN and a…
