Fox Sports’ selfie shaming of sorority was casual sexism at its most insidious – The Guardian (blog)

Saturday, October 03, 2015

The Arizona Diamondbacks entered Wednesday night’s game at Chase Field with a record of 76-81, all but the OED definition of mediocre and a dozen games adrift of the first-place Dodgers in the NL West. They are a middling ball club riding out the string in a sport where nearly all of the 2,430 games played in a season will be quickly forgotten, even by the players on the field….

For many drivers, the restart box was too small for their liking, and the policing of the situation was inconsistent at best. Many feel this move by NASCAR to expand the box will help alleviate some of the issues. After Dover, NASCAR will…

Watching Ronaldinho in his prime—nipping the ball around defenders with moves you’d either never seen someone pull off in real life or at least never, say, against some of the world’s best defenders, in the middle of the sport’s fiercest rivalry, in front of 80,000 opposing fans, with supporters so moved that they were compelled to stand and applaud their team’s executioner—it would’ve been a perfectly understandable response to think…

Is Aussie rules inherently unpredictable? Or is sports punditry dysfunctional? – The Guardian

Saturday, October 03, 2015

Footy fans might be surprised to learn of a parallel world: at the top of the ladder sits an imperious Port Adelaide; at its foot lie the hapless Dogs. Gold Coast make the eight, the superior of the newest expansion teams. West Coast creeps into the eight too, but aren’t fancied beyond the first round. There will be no finals for the Crows. In this strange world, Port coach Ken…

Inside Baseball: Nationals to let Williams go, and more MLB moves – CBSSports.com

Friday, October 02, 2015

Embattled Nationals manager Matt Williams’ firing was a certainty even before he missed, then mishandled a dugout choking incident that became national news. He’s a nice man and he tried hard, but he probably was miscast as a first-time manager with a team toting huge expectations. Meanwhile, the team’s general manager Mike Rizzo, who assembled an impressive array of talent, though apparently not a great team, “isn’t going anywhere,” according…

When it looked like the Cubs might have a shot at making the playoffs in early August, there was much speculation as to who would start in the wild-card game—Jon Lester or Jake Arrieta. Well, Arrieta quickly put that to rest with his Bob Gibson impersonation over the past two months. But, as the Chicago Sun-Times’ Gordon Wittenmyer first reported, the Cubs were set on Arrieta long before his stuff…
