Angels broadcaster Jose Mota makes baseball and beisbol history – Los Angeles Times

Sunday, August 27, 2017

Jose Mota collected eight hits in the major leagues, none of them for extra bases. Cooperstown called the other day. Not for one of his bats, to be sure. The Hall of Fame wanted the scorecard he used last weekend. He had just hit a grand slam, as a broadcaster. He had called the Angels game on radio, in English. That made him the first announcer in major league history…

Survivor: Reality show becomes possible road to Olympics – ABC News

Saturday, August 26, 2017

The fact that Josh Williamson hadn’t stepped on ice until about a month ago hardly makes him an ideal candidate to become an Olympic bobsledder. Then again, if Williamson completes the journey from the lacrosse fields in Florida to a bobsled track in Pyeongchang next year — or Beijing in 2022 — he will, in more than one way, be rewriting the script about how an American can become an…

US Soccer: Not a progressive bastion – Aljazeera.com

Saturday, August 26, 2017

US Soccer has long been subject to tensions between its more nativist, nationalist impulses and more liberal, progressive tendencies. That battle may be coming to a head now in the age of Donald Trump as the national federation is taking a political stance in favour of the status quo with its policy banning protests by players during the playing of the US anthem. As expected, all players in the US men’s…

With two races remaining in the NASCAR Cup Series regular season, Martin Truex Jr. has accumulated an astonishing 35 playoff points (and counting). Baseball Loosens Rules and Opens Door to a Vibrant Weekend … – New York Times

Saturday, August 26, 2017

Other than designated games like those on Mother’s Day (which has been awash in pink in recent years) or the Fourth of July (when a red-white-and-blue motif prevails), players have to follow a precise and lengthy uniform code. It mandates that 51 percent of cleats’ surface be in the team’s designated primary shoe color and compatible with the team’s design and color scheme and that bats have a natural finish…

Tremayne Cobb Jr. wants to put Prince George’s County, Maryland, baseball on the map – The Undefeated

Saturday, August 26, 2017

Tremayne Cobb Jr. loses himself in baseball’s soundtrack, entranced by the game’s rhythms and rules. Three strikes and you’re out; three outs and the inning is over; smack a base hit into the outfield and, if you have enough time, take second base. Despite playing in a Maryland county hardly known for its baseball, Cobb Jr.’s speed on the basepaths and with the bat has college coaches salivating. But when…

Mayweather-McGregor and the death spiral of American sports – SB Nation

Friday, August 25, 2017

I used to work at the American casual dining chain Bennigan’s, and it’s really helped me think about the impending shitshow that is the Mayweather-McGregor fight. This was in the death spiral days of their lifespan as a business, meaning no one had come up with a new idea at Bennigan’s for at least ten years, maybe longer. Instead, every “new” idea at Bennigan’s consisted of combinations of old ideas…
