Life, baseball, and the Mets – Amazin’ Avenue

Friday, August 21, 2015

The final game of a baseball season is always tough. As the players walk off the field for the last time, you start thinking about the months you’ll have to wait before seeing them on the field again. And yet, you take comfort in knowing that Opening Day will eventually arrive—and with it, another full season of baseball. But for the Port Washington Vikings, this game was different. For…

Baseball’s Most Unfortunate Feat – Wall Street Journal

Friday, August 21, 2015

ENLARGE Winning 20 games is an uncommon achievement these days in baseball, what with pitchers being tied to tight pitch counts. But Aaron Harang of the Philadelphia Phillies has a shot at an even tougher feat: losing 20. Losing 20 games requires a lot to go right. (And, of course, wrong.) Besides typically needing to be on a miserable team, the pitcher needs to be healthy enough to get a…

Baseball Capsules – ABC News

Friday, August 21, 2015

Chris Archer pitched a one-hitter, allowing only a fifth-inning single by Colby Rasmus, and struck out 11 to lead the Tampa Bay Rays over the Houston Astros 1-0 Thursday night. It was Archer’s third career shutout and second against the Astros, having also blanked them in 2013. Archer (11-9) retired the final 15 batters, fanning five. Rasmus led off the fifth with a groundball single and was the last runner…

Little Pirates Fan Gets Baseball, Refuses To Put Down His Sign – Deadspin

Thursday, August 20, 2015

Eight-year-old Pirates fan Dominic (sp?) held up a sign during last night’s Pirates game, in an attempt to get Starling Marte to give him a baseball for his birthday. Marte threw a ball in his direction, but another child grabbed it, which made little Dom sad. Poor Dom. There’s a happy ending to this story, though. The Root Sports crew talked to the kid and handed him his own baseball….

Around baseball, Dombrowski hiring seen as a home run – Boston Globe

Thursday, August 20, 2015

You hear the occasional criticism that he was too demanding, or he didn’t communicate so well at times, or he didn’t know how to put together a bullpen (which may have cost the Tigers a world championship). But for the most part, Dave Dombrowski, the new Red Sox president of baseball operations, has few detractors and far more admirers in the game. “He’ll be in the Hall of Fame someday,”…

Kyle Gaedele, proud relative of Eddie Gaedel, has full-sized baseball goals – ESPN

Thursday, August 20, 2015

0 Shares Print It is one of the most unforgettable, if not one of the most unusual, images in major league baseball history. Eddie Gaedel, all 3-foot-7 and 65 pounds of him, crouched over in the batter’s box, waiting for a pitch that would never come anywhere near a strike zone that was estimated to be 1.5 inches in height. The stunt pulled off 64 years ago — Aug. 19,…

Cincinnati’s Green Diamond Gallery is one man’s baseball passion play – FOXSports.com

Tuesday, August 18, 2015

Sure, you could donate your finest items to the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown. But most of those items would wind up in the basement, there, too. Even more spacious, yes, and perfectly climate-controlled. But still locked away most of the time, enjoyed by only the very lucky few. You could piece out your collection – here a bat to the Negro Leagues Museum in Kansas…

Inside prison baseball with the San Quentin Giants – For The Win

Tuesday, August 18, 2015

The thing you don’t expect about playing baseball in prison is that everyone is extremely friendly. The entire roster of convicted felons who suited up for the San Quentin Giants on Thursday seemed genuinely grateful for the opportunity to play against some weekend warriors from the outside: Welcoming us and thanking us for coming upon our arrival in the prison yard, stopping by the visitors’ dugout for pleasantries during the game,…

If you aim a pitch at a player’s head, expect a lingering scowl. Then a home run. And definitely some fighting words. They are the most interesting, compelling and unique team in baseball.
